SHORT STORY UNIT {THEME ANALYSIS}

 Every individual in the world has their own ability to decide how much control they want of their lives, but in certain circumstances fate does not let you decide on your life. We live in world right now where there is free will, free will gives us the ability to shape our own lives through our actions and our decisions. There are some things that will always be out of our control but in most circumstances, we hold the power to shape our own futures. There was once a time when there was no free will, and everything was left up to fate. Fast forward, the difference between fate and free will is that fate is predetermined and there is no outrunning your fate, but you can change your free will with the decisions you make.

In the story Children of the Sea, there is not many options for free will. The people in the story are being abused and attacked by the soldiers. It is like fate in the story more than free will because, the country Haiti at the time is filled poverty and lack of education and needs. The soldiers took control and started abusing the people. In the story, the soldiers killed a person and cut his head off and just left the head for the victim's mom to see. The soldiers are brutal and violent they show no remorse, and they do things how they want to. The mom is in pain, seeing her own child's head. Another example of what the soldiers did were, they went to the house and raped and impregnated Celianne, they forced her brother to have sex with their own mom and then arrested her brother to never be seen again. The soldiers are brutal they show no remorse or sympathy to the abuse and crimes they are committing to the people of Haiti. There is no free will for the people here, their fate was predetermined being born into a country filled with poverty and struggles. No matter how much you try to get out of your own past. It catches up to you at some point and then you face the pain. In the story, all one can feel is sympathy for the people of Haiti.

In the story, Interpreter of Maladies, there is free will. This story happened in a more modern time. In the story Mr. Kapasi has full free will of himself but he chose to live the sad and lonely life. He chose to live unhappy and just work all day everyday so he can forget the pain. He is trying to forget the pain of losing his son and then his wife blaming him and losing her as well. He lives a life full of misery and pain. He has his own free will and try to make his life better, but he instead chooses to just work and hope that the pain goes away. He chooses to imagine a fantasy of being in a relationship with Mrs. Das because he believes she is like a female version of him, and they belong with one another. The decisions that he makes shapes his life, in the story he tried to imagine a relationship with Mrs. Das but after realizing she never had any intentions like that and that she sees him as a father figure it disgusts him. Another example of the free will is Mrs. Das, she is unfaithful to her husband, and she is keeping it as a secret from him. She is living a guilty life and she is seeking answers. The whole story she is trying to find answers to her problems which is why she sees Mr. Kapasi as a father figure because she always asks him answers to her problems. In this story, the characters have free will, their own life decisions shape them to be the person they are, and they live a life based on the decisions they have made out of their own free will.

 Fate being predetermined, there are just some things in this world you cannot control. One cannot control where they are being born or who they are being born to. One cannot make changes to their own environment if the conditions around them does not let them to. We live in a world where there is more free will, we shape our lives and our futures based on our decisions. One cannot force anything; everything happens for a reason. Just let it be and go with the flow.
