Finding Your Identity (PUB 3)

Post Modernism is a movement, it challenges traditional narrative structures. It has fragmentation and uncertainty. Interpreter of Maladies explores a complex story, it consists of complex themes and identities, struggles and themes of where one belongs. The experiences of the characters in the story show the uncertainty, the struggles within oneself and the relationships between the characters. The post modernism perspective in this story is the complex human relationships between the characters. Mrs. Das struggles with a lot of dissatisfaction and unhappiness in her life. She is very unhappy with her life and very unhappy in her marriage and does not feel in sync with her own children. She struggles with the feeling of regret, shame and guilt over a past affair she had in the past with another man. In the story, she struggles with uncertainty because she is trying very hard to find her meaning in life and find her place in the world. She is trying to find her sense of belonging in this world. Her journey is complex and consists of a lot of uncertainty with her life. She struggles with a lot of internal conflicts and is very flawed. Her trying to find herself and find her identity within the world is the common theme in this story and it is something very relatable. In the play, she keeps asking for her deeper meaning in life and her purpose in her life from Mr. Kapasi, but he could not help her. Her character is filled with guilt, shame and regret. Mr. Kapasi is a lonely and unfulfilled man who is also searching for happiness and meaning in his life. Kapasi is disconnected from the world, he lives a life filled with guilt and he uses work as a distraction to not think about his problems. He seeks a deeper meaning and tries to find it within Mrs. Das, he creates a far-fetched fantasy in his head that he is in an intimate relationship with Mrs. Das, or he is trying to be in an intimate relationship with her. He creates this false perception of him and her and thinks she is going to respond to his feelings because she is also a female version of him, disconnected from the world, unhappy in her marriage, and trying to find her purpose in life. He is deeply infatuated with her and believes that in order to be happy she is the key to happiness. Mr. Kapasi realizes that Mrs. Das never had any kind of feelings for him, and he is forced to confront the reality of his own life. She always viewed him as a father figure, and he feels disappointed and is in disgust about how she saw him. The guilt, failure, shame, regret and all can be connected to the present life as well. In present life, there are many scandals such as Tristan Thompson cheating on his wife Khloe Kardashian many times. He carries that guilt, regret and shame with him everywhere. His career was affected, and his life was filled with shame and regret. The character flaw that Mrs. Das had for the past affair is connected to this theme. Another example is Shakira and Pique, Pique has an affair and is caught by his girlfriend who he has kids with. His life was then filled with shame and regret and guilt, and Shakira is carrying the theme of resentment for Pique for the rest of her life. The complex themes and uncertainty that Mrs. Das and Mr. Kapasi share is the flaw, and it is what that relates it with post modernism. The human relationships that Interpreter of Maladies shows is the the uncertainty and the experiences that post modernism is trying to show. Post modernism shows human experiences and bases life of that.
